Embracing Technology: Building Connected Relationships when Working with Young People

2 min read

In today’s digital world, where screens dominate our lives, the importance of human connection cannot be emphasised enough, especially when it comes to working with and supporting young people. That might seem like a strange thing for a software organisation to say, but building genuine relationships based on trust, empathy, and understanding is crucial for their emotional and cognitive development.

‘It’s not about the product, it’s about practice’ – Jo Miles, North Yorkshire Council

Mind Of My Own recently hosted our flagship VoxCon conference in Manchester alongside around 100 Practitioners using our tools to support young people. VoxCon is an opportunity to bring our Local Authority Community together, remind ourselves of our binding passion for improving outcomes for children and young people and most importantly, build meaningful connections with each other. One of my key takeaways was the focus on practice over product – how the Mind Of My Own suite of products are enablers to better conversations, stronger connections and improved care and support for the young people that need it most.

We were reminded that human connection is central to children’s wellbeing and the development of their growth and learning.

Emotional Development

Human connection plays a pivotal role in shaping a child’s emotional development. When children feel connected to their caregivers, teachers, or mentors, they experience a sense of security and belonging. This connection creates a safe space for them to express their emotions, seek support, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Meaningful interactions help them navigate challenges, build resilience, and develop self-confidence.

Academic Achievement

Human connection in educational settings has a profound impact on academic achievement. When children feel valued, supported, and connected to their teachers, they are more motivated to learn. Positive relationships foster a nurturing environment where children feel safe to ask questions, share ideas, and engage actively in the learning process.

In conclusion

Prioritising human connection when working with children is of utmost importance. The Mind Of My Own tools allow children and young people to share their story. They provide children with the opportunity to express their thoughts, perspectives, and feelings – either through sharing good news, sorting a problem or preparing for a meeting – our apps foster emotional well-being and cultivate resilience.

By giving young people the opportunity to share their story in their own words, we create an environment where children can thrive, grow, and reach their full potential.
