Kindness: A quick recipe for wellbeing

< 1 min read

Less than two months into 2024 the familiar trend of struggle dominates the news and moods of communities across the world. With less social activity and daylight during this time of year, wellbeing is left particularly vulnerable, leading to spikes in Seasonal Affective Disorder and depression rates across age groups.

How can we rediscover the brightness in our day without forking out on a beach holiday or plug-in daylight lamp? One creative approach is recognising and celebrating small acts of daily life that can often be lost in the whirlwind of ominous headlines and cloudy skies…

Brighten someone’s day…

Random Acts of Kindness Day takes place on February 17th and is dedicated to promoting kindness and goodwill. It encourages individuals to perform simple, unexpected acts of kindness to brighten someone’s day and create a ripple effect of positivity. Putting a focus back on what we can do as individuals empowers each of us to look after those around us and feel better connected.

And that’s not all! Research by San Diego State University has revealed those performing acts of kindness had lower levels of systemic inflammation which helps reduce the risk of many major diseases. The positive effects are there for both sides to enjoy.

As we keep on through the depths of winter, here are some ideas for practising kindness:

Give Compliments: Offer sincere compliments to friends, family, and even strangers to brighten their day.

Send Thoughtful Messages: Send uplifting messages or notes to friends, reminding them of your appreciation and support.

Donate to Charity: Contribute to a charitable organization or cause that you’re passionate about.

Volunteer Your Time: Volunteer at local charities, shelters, or community events to make a positive impact.

We can each help make the world a better place through thoughtful actions. And perhaps bringing unexpected kindness to those around you may help you find some in return…
